Geek Girl Con 2017

Hey there Fanpeeps! (Is this a good term? IDK)

Last weekend (September 30-October 1) I went to Geek Girl Con (GGC) in Seattle!

(I also made my Star Wars skirt from a sheet, but we'll talk about that later!)

This is my third year attending, and my first with a press pass, and it has been the best one yet! It's also been the biggest with over 12,000 people in attendance. I was so excited to be able to hang out with my fantastic friend Hilary from The Cutie Life and her husband Fletch and see so many friends and make a few new ones! You can read her post about the con here and watch her video on her youtube channel here

With all the negative and disastrous things happening in our world recently, it was nice to escape into a nicer reality for a while. If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to go to a place where everyone is respected and included regardless of the factors that usually divide us: this is it. And it is a beautiful thing.

If you haven't heard of GGC, or have brushed off the idea of a con aimed at a female audience being any good, then you're really missing out! Geek Girl Con is first and foremost inclusive. That means no one is left out of any geeky discussions or events regardless of their physical and mental states or abilities. I say geeky, but you don't even have to identify as a geek to be a part of this convention! (I'm mostly just saying it out of convenience.) The convention name also says "girl", but while this convention is mostly aimed at females (because we are so often overlooked in geek society), no one is excluded because of their gender identity. All are welcome! There are gender neutral bathrooms! And one of the best things is that it's completely run by volunteers!!! I think that's pretty impressive.

The convention hosts activities, booths, and panels with a wide range of subjects in anything from science and mathematics to fashion and feminism. A lot of times the subjects aren't mutually exclusive and they overlap to form something new and creative. It is really family friendly and even has a science center for kids to experiment and learn new things. No matter what interests you have, there is probably something for you at GGC. If anything you will walk away from the convention having learned something new!

The Panels:

There are always so many really cool and introspective panels to attend at Geek Girl Con. Not to mention that the rooms are named after extraordinary female characters! Last year we attended a panel called "Women in Pixar" and this year we attended one called "Looking for Leia". The panel and it's documentary namesake showcased an incredible group of female Star Wars fangirls from all walks of life. You can watch the same inspiring and tear-jerking preview here:

We also got a really rad poster for attending! As I am a huge Star Wars fangirl myself, I approached the director of the film, Annalise Ophelian, after the panel to talk about being interviewed and she told me to talk to anyone if I saw them on the con floor. I kept missing them, but as we were making our way to (I think it was) the Cosplay competition I was stopped by the team for an interview! Of course I told them about my Lightsaber Scarves!!!

Mega huge thanks to Hilary for capturing this behind the scenes look at my interview and for waiting for me! I was nervous and fidgeting but she helped keep me grounded and hyped! Thank you so much Hilary & Fletch!!!

The Artists:

There are SO MANY remarkable artists and I wish I could support all of them!! If you've been looking for new fandom art, look no further than the Exhibitor floor at Geek Girl Con. A few of the artists I've known since my first GGC 3 years ago and have grown close to in the passing years!

Chrissy from Winged Warrior is one of those and she is the absolute sweetest!!!

Not only that but she makes amazing art. At this point I will have a wall of her prints in no time! (I just need some more frames.) Her Disney Princess series is one of my favorites. I must collect them all!

At the booth next door was Art of Nikki Ward /Geek Fire Labs, who also does fantastic prints and had a spectacularly geeky assortment of products. Last year I got lip balm and this year I got a Leia print and a wax melt in "Wonderland". It smells amazing!

Some others artists I would like to mention are:
Erika Rae Heins- gorgeous Tolkien and fantasy inspired art. She also makes some pretty cool upcycled steampunk clothing items
Bunny from S2Heart Designs- Hilary introduced us and she makes super cute chibis and other designs including cute penis pins (I promise that's cute! I should have gotten one!)
Jayme Twins art- really fun and simple character profiles from multiple fandoms and more!
Katie Clark Art- Bright, colorful prints and original paintings inspired by video games and much more
The Gorgonist

The Vendors:

Not only will you find great art at the con, but you will probably walk away with some really cool fangirl swag as well! This year was especially exciting for me because I would finally get to meet two spectacular small business owners that I have looked up to for years: Jordan from Jordandené and Elena from the Colorful Geek!

These ladies kill it with their shirt designs and other products!

Fanmail was across the exhibitor hall and had a really fun wheel of prizes. I got a bath bomb!

I love seeing what new surprises they have in each box! You should check them out if subscription boxes are your thing!! I snagged a beautiful bag that says "All men must die, but we are not men" from them and I love it so much! It fit perfectly with the shirt I bought from The Colorful Geek that says "Mother of Dragons".

At Geeky Caticorn I got this REALLY CUTE Fangirl necklace! I absolutely adore it!!!

Planned Parenthood had a really fun booth where you can take a picture with Phillomena (sp?) the Birth Control mascot!

And so much more!!!

The Fashion Show:

Saturday evening at 7:30 was the Fashion Show which featured designs from Little Petal, Haute Geek, Jordandené, Booty and the Geek, and Elhoffer Design with Makeup by Espionage Cosmetics and styling by VAIN Hairstyling. It was a really fun experience! I loved seeing the diverse group of models. They were all beautiful! (But very hard to photograph because I only had my phone! lol)

The Environment:

I have never felt so comfortable at a convention as I do at Geek Girl Con. Granted, I haven't attended many conventions in the past, but Geek Girl Con is the most welcoming I have ever experienced. As someone with anxiety (specifically social anxiety) I often find it hard to fit in with strangers in large groups. That has never been the case with Geek Girl Con. I feel like you could talk to just about anyone and have things in common with them. Almost everyone is friendly and wonderful and it is so very comfortable. (I say almost here because there's always some people who would rather keep to themselves, and that's completely OK!!!) This is why I keep coming back. I feel like you can make meaningful connections with people you hardly know, and there's not a whole lot of other places where you can find an experience like that.

Being a geek girl is weird sometimes. It feels like we have to constantly remind people that we exist, that our credibility is up to date, and that we're adhering to whatever guidelines there are for us. Geek Girl Con reminds us that not only do we exist, but we have always been here, will continue to be, and we define ourselves and our geekyness.

It doesn't hurt to surround yourself with lots of like-minded people either! Hilary introduced me to a few new awesome people, and I finally got to meet Mia Moore from XO Mia who came all the way from Texas for this show! She makes super cool cosplay and is all around awesome! I bought pins from both her and Hilary. (Support your friends!!) It was wonderful to have met all these amazing women and be surrounded by positivity for the weekend.

Going back to reality is hard even a week later.

Let me know in the comments if you've gone to Geek Girl Con in the past and what your experience was like OR if you would like to have a similar convention in your area!

Spread the geeky love around!

Swapping Valentines with Fellow Fangirls

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays! The decorations, candy, hearts and love everywhere, the candy... it all makes me feel ridiculous, but I love it. So when I saw that the absolutely fantastic Natalie from Natalie Patalie set up a Valentine exchange for geek girl bloggers I immediately had to sign up! It's been a while since I participated in a swap with more than one partner, but I knew this would be fun.

Valentine's Day is all about spreading the love! Knowing that the others took a little time to see what I might like made me feel special too

Like all of the Doctor Who themed cards:

The store-bought Valentines were also super cute!

The ladies in this group are so supportive and kind, and I'm so happy to be a part of it!

I'd also like to throw a special shout-out to Dina from Mom's Gonna Snap because I rarely get portraits of myself and I love it ever so much!!

Thank you to everyone who sent out Valentines in the swap! I had a lot of fun and I would love to do this again! 😁

A bunch of my letters before they were sent off

Eleven's Eggo Hat

Galentine's day is pretty much over and Valentine's day has just begun, BUT I still want to take time to celebrate one of the most badass gals out there: Eleven from Stranger Things! (And her love for Eggos!)

Stranger Things Eleven's Eggo Hat and casual cosplay

Those of us who have watched Stranger Things know that if Eleven could be a fangirl of anything she'd be one for Eggos. The minute I saw the trailer for season 2 I got the idea for a waffle hat and started designing! It's too bad that we have to wait until Halloween for more episodes, but knitting a few waffles will keep a person busy in the meantime, right?

Stranger Things Eleven's Eggo Hat and casual cosplay
I'm here to kick ass and eat Eggos. And I'm all out of Eggos.
I hope to have the (free!) pattern up in the next few weeks if nothing gets in the way. I'm currently working out the kinks in how I've been writing the pattern. If anyone is interested in pre-testing it leave me a comment and we'll chat!

UPDATE 10/30/17: Pattern now available for fee on Ravelry!
Get it here!

Should I stay or should Eggo?

This hat is ridiculously comfortable and warm! A perfect thermal hat for colder weather. Best part is that if you're not a huge fan or Eggos and waffles (for SHAME) this pattern is subtle enough to get away with not looking like one. Oh, and did I mention it's REVERSIBLE?

Stranger Things Eleven's Eggo Hat and casual cosplay

So knitters, stay tuned for the pattern! If anyone is interested in having their very own hat and don't knit or don't feel like it, let me know and I'd be happy to make one for you!

This was really fun to shoot! My personal photographer (mom) and I ventured deep into our neighboring woods and basically had a great time getting dirty and goofing off! (No matter how serious I look, I can't help being a huge dork underneath.) I was quite proud of my make up and styling for this shoot too. All of the pieces for the outfit came from thrift stores. The collar was from a button-up that I altered to make into a Peter Pan shape, and I can't wait to wear it with more outfits!

Friends don't lie, Thanks for stopping by and reading my post!

Are you excited for Stranger Things to return?? Let me know in the comments!

By the way, this post is in no way sponsored by Eggo or Netflix. Believe me, guys, I'd tell you if that happened. In fact, I'd never shut up about it.

Lightsaber Scarves For the Crafty Jedi

Hey fellow fans! Happy Star Wars Day part II!

I've kept these a secret for over two months, and I figured May the 4th would be the best day to finally share! (I know it's almost over, shhhh)

Lightsaber scarves!

Blue and Green Lightsaber Scarves by the Fangirl Crafter

I am so very proud of these! I crocheted them completely without a pattern using my lightsaber hilts and various internet photos for reference.

Luke Skywalker Blue Lightsaber Scarf by the Fangirl Crafter

I tried to include as many details as possible to make it look semi-screen-accurate.

Luke Skywalker Green Lightsaber Scarf by the Fangirl Crafter

As I said in my last post, I grew up with Star Wars. It was a huge part of my childhood. It never mattered that the hero was a boy, I knew from the beginning that I was a Jedi just like Luke Skywalker. The green lightsaber was (and still is) my favorite.

Then The Force Awakens came along, and here's Rey being everything I've always wanted in a hero, completely solidifying my choice.

Luke Skywalker Blue Lightsaber Scarf by the Fangirl Crafter

When I saw the blue lightsaber in her hands, I knew had to make it too!

The crocheting student has become the master!

I have a New Hope for the Star Wars franchise. (Oh yes, I went there.) I can't wait to watch Rogue One and Episode VIII!!! GIVE ME ALL THE STAR WARS

Now if they would just put more Rey merch on the shelves! Amiright?!

What other lightsaber would you like to see crochetified?
I've got some other ideas marinating in my noggin'. I'll get around to them eventually. ;)

FYI: if I ever do make these to sell or on request, they will not be cheap. If you're absolutely serious I will consider making another one. Send me an e-mail and we'll chat!

May the force be with you, fans!

Thanks to my mom for putting up with all my geeky photo requests. You're a trooper ;)

Yub Nub! Knitted Ewok Hood

It's May the 4th and you know what that means!
It's Star Wars Day!

One of my favorite geeky holidays! And boy do I have some awesomeness to show you! (Considering you like Star Wars and/or knitted/crocheted things.) Keep an eye out for new posts today and/or tomorrow for Revenge of the 5th!

Star Wars is my ultimate favorite fandom. It was the first one I really became a part of, and has stuck with me for over 18 years. This past winter, I finally decided to add a really cute Star Wars inspired hood to my collection:
The Ewok hood!

Knit orange Ewok hood like Wicket from Star Wars

This idea has been marinating in my mind for the past 8 years or so. I was never able to find a pattern that was exactly what I wanted. That is until the day that I decided to design my own!

Knit orange Ewok hood like Wicket from Star Wars

The results are really satisfying and super cute! I even wore it to the theater when I went to see The Force Awakens. Once people figured out what it was, they loved it!

Knit orange Ewok hood like Wicket from Star Wars

While I will not be releasing a pattern in the near future, (mostly because I'm rubbish at it,) I will give you an idea of how it came to be! If you are more advanced with knitting, you may be able to work out a pattern that suits you!

The piece was knit flat long enough to go around my neck and more. Then I bound off 15 or so stitches from the end and continued upwards with the hood. At a certain point, I began decreases in the center to add a curved shape to the back of the hood. (I HATE pointy hoods! Unless they're elf hoods...) When the length was right, I kitchener stitched the top sides together.

If you make a hood based on this, please tag me in it on Instagram or Twitter and use #fangirlcrafter!

For the ears I used a pattern from Stitch Geek that I found on Ravelry. Adjusting the pattern according to my needs, I knit the pieces together using two types of yarn for my desired look. I used (my favorite) Caron Simply Soft solids in brown for the plain front and Jo-Ann Sensations Beautiful for the fuzzy back.

It's so comfy and so much fun to wear!

Have you ever made an Ewok hood or something Star Wars related? Let me know in the comments!
Also, feel free to add me on Ravelry. Even if I'm not on that often, it's fun seeing what friends are making and connecting with other yarncrafters!

I hope you have a FANtastic day, and May the 4th be with you, always.

ECCC 2016

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Emerald City Comicon here in Seattle!

It was my first year attending, so I chose to only go on Sunday. I had a wonderful time!!!

I made my Kaylee Frye (Firefly) dress about a week before con. (There will be a separate post with all the details about that next week.)

I made a new friend right off the bat.

You can check out this fella's maker on Instagram here.

Keep reading for the whole experience!

Pi Day Leftovers

Yesterday was rounded Pi day! (3.14159 to 3.1416) Pie is round! PIE!

Polymer Clay Pies

Math wasn't much of a strong suit for me after High School, but Pi Day has been something I celebrated just for geeks and giggles.  I was even lucky enough to find a Pi themed shirt while thrifting recently! Score!

The day before Pi Day I managed to craft up a Pi pie just in time for the occasion! A delicious looking triple berry pie too, my favorite!

Polymer Clay Pie

Wait, that's polymer clay. I can't eat that! But I sure am gonna wear it!

You can make your own by following this recipe by Sweetorials on Youtube:

I can't very well mention Pie without talking about Dean Winchester. Last year I went to SEACON (Seattle Supernatural convention) with one of my good friends and dressed as "lady Dean" or crossplay Dean. I actually made these earrings specifically for the event! It was an awesome time!

Polymer Clay Pie earrings

They are quite heavy, but so much fun to wear!

Here's the wonderful tutorial from PuddingFishCakes I used:

And speaking of Geeky pies, I love turning my chicken pot pies into geeky masterpieces! Here are a few that I still have photos of:

Need a pie? Why not Zoidberg?

It seems like I'm perpetually celebrating Pi day the day after, so I find the "A Pi Day Late" pie especially fitting for this post.

Did you do anything to celebrate Pi day?
What's your favorite kind of pie?

Super Mario Earrings

Happy Mario day everyone!

Mario Day polymer clay earrings

(Get it, "MAR10"!)

I don't know about you, but the Mario Bros. series of games has been consistently one of my favorites. I've loved the character designs from the 8-big beginnings to today's cute and cuddly 3D versions. Even the monsters are cute and loveable!

That's why when I first saw chain chomp and piranha plant earrings for sale on Etsy, I knew I wanted a pair of each for myself. I put off buying them until one day I came across the YouTube channel NerdECrafter

These tutorials changed my life (or at least my crafting game). Jackie is the reason why I started playing with polymer clay in the first place. Her videos make even tough projects look easier, and they are! There are so many more awesome and geeky tutorials on NerdECrafter, so please check them out!

Here are a few Mario Bros. themed earring sets I made:

Chain Chomps

Mario Day polymer clay chain chomp earrings

*crazy barking noises*

Mario Day polymer clay chain chomp earrings

These are my favorite to wear because they are so fun! The chompers are doing their job and they're not letting go! The ear cuff gives it a little something extra too.

Mario Day polymer clay chain chomp earrings

"Are you my mummy?"

Using this tutorial, I was finally able to make a pair of chain chomps for myself. Easy peasy! (Actually, that's not true. I spent hours working on this trying to make it look right. But it wasn't as bad or as hard as it looks!) Check it out:

Bullet Bills

Mario Day polymer clay Bullet Bill earrings

I made these for a friend's son. They were really fun and challenging to make. I still need to make a pair for myself!

Mario Day polymer clay Bullet Bill earrings

I didn't use a tutorial for this one, just a lot of reference photos!

Piranha Plants

Mario Day polymer clay piranha plant earrings

They're my favorite!! I have several Venus fly trap plants in my house, so I'm a big fan of carnivorous plants. Even when they're trying to bite me!

Mario Day polymer clay piranha plant earrings

"Feed us, Bowser!"

Watch out, they bite!

Mine look a little different, but here's the tutorial I used from NerdECrafter:

I highly recommend not doing sharp points like I did. It can make your ears angry after a while!

1-UP Mushroom

Mario Day polymer clay 1-UP mushroom earrings

I made these specifically for my birthday last year when I went to the EMP in Seattle to celebrate leveling up.

Even more perfect was the awesome Mario-themed mural they had there!
